picOur Mission

Kent School is a regional, independent day school serving students from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. Our primary goal is to help our students realize their full promise. We accomplish this by setting high academic and personal standards; by having a devoted and highly skilled faculty; and by actively living our community values of integrity, respect, responsibility and friendship. We honor the diverse backgrounds and special talents of our students and strive to maintain a strong school-home partnership and a safe, warm environment. Our students leave Kent School ready for the challenges of college-preparatory secondary schools.

Central to our mission is a school philosophy built upon several principles. We understand that the child is at the center of the learning process. We encourage our students to be resourceful, independent and disciplined learners who have the confidence to take risks and who readily accept new challenges. We recognize the power of interdisciplinary teaching. We value our commitments and connections to our local and global communities.

Our School

Kent School is comprised of three divisions: the Little School, for three, four, and five year olds; the Lower School, for students in kindergarten through fourth grade; and the Middle School, for students in fifth through eighth grades.

The Little School

The Little School is where our students begin their educational journey. The program is designed to foster early childhood development. Emphasis is placed on critical thinking, pre-reading and math skills and the integration of social studies, science, music, and art. Families may choose a schedule that varies from three half days to five full days per week. The Little School at Kent School is a special, busy place!

The Lower School

The Lower School presents our students with an integrated curriculum that stresses the acquisition of basic skills and celebrates and attends to the needs of the individual student. Language Arts activities form the academic foundation in Lower School. Our students begin to use computers in kindergarten and use them in all subject areas by third grade. Math, science, Spanish, music, physical education, library, and art complete our curriculum.

The Middle School

The Middle School program is designed to promote academic and personal growth in our students. We expect them to be responsible learners and help them develop an awareness of self and others. With appropriate challenges and the support of a caring faculty, our students develop a genuine sense of self esteem. Critical thinking, research, and organizational skills are taught across disciplines; an integrated language arts and history program is offered in fifth and sixth grades; and small group teaching, collaborative and cooperative learning, and peer review are stressed. Interscholastic athletic competition in soccer, field hockey, basketball, and lacrosse begins in sixth grade.
